A peek into my notes app

(+ 3 phrases of comfort)

My notes app is a lovely mess of quotes and words that struck me in some meaningful way. Words that bring me peace, or that surprise me, or that help me see the world in a different way. I return to these phrases when I need a nudge of courage or a spark of inspiration.

So today I want to share a series of three thoughts I saved that help me move through periods of anxiety and stress in hopes that it might serve you too:

“I care deeply, but I do not worry.” - Peter Crone

  • For all my over-worriers, remember that you are allowed to feel deeply passionate about a topic, but you are also allowed to surrender to the will of the world.

  • The goal is not to feel apathetic about your work or a situation, but rather to remember that you can separate your deep sense of caring from feeling a sense of responsibility for the outcome.

  • Journal prompt to go deeper: Reflect on an area of your life where you often find yourself worrying. How would applying this quote's wisdom change your perspective and actions in that situation? Describe how you can care deeply without the weight of constant worry.

“If it’s not this, it’s something better.”  - Flynn Skidmore

  • My god, I love this quote when I feel like something I really, really want just slipped through my fingers. It's a beautiful reminder that the things in this world that are truly meant for us will not miss us. If it's not the job or the relationship or the home or the trip that we really wanted, then it's something better coming our way.

  • How much easier would it be to relax into the present if we always knew that something more perfect, more wonderful, more incredible than our wildest dreams can imagine?

  • Journal prompt to go deeper: Recall a recent disappointment or setback you've experienced. How does this quote resonate with your own experiences? Write about how believing in the possibility of 'something better' can shift your mindset and outlook.

“Impatience is an argument with reality” - Rick Rubin

  • I am not a patient person by nature. I must continuously remind myself that fighting what is does not change what is (ugh).

  • No matter how we feel about a situation, our aggressive, judgmental energy only really harms ourselves and potentially others around us.

  • It reminds me of another observation from Donald Glover as he notes, "It's kind of like when people complain about how bad traffic is and I'm like 'you are traffic'."

  • Our impatience (no matter how justified in our eyes) contributes to the collective aggravation in the world, and it's something that's entirely within our power to shift.

  • Journal prompt to go deeper: Think about a situation where impatience has caused you frustration. How might adopting the perspective that impatience is like arguing with reality help you cope better with such situations? Describe how you can work on embracing patience in your daily life.
